Why choose Pro One for paver construction

  • Driveways built for weight

Vehicle areas get a deeper aggregate base and pavers rated for traffic, so the surface does not rut or sink under cars and delivery trucks.

  • Patterns and borders

Herringbone, running bond, basketweave and random patterns, finished with soldier course or contrasting borders that frame the space.

  • Repairable surface

Individual pavers can be lifted and reset after a utility repair or a settled spot, with no patch marks left behind.

  • Tight, clean joints

Joints are filled with polymeric sand and compacted, which locks the pavers together and helps keep weeds and ants out.

Paver construction is one of the most practical ways to surface a driveway, patio or pool deck in New Jersey. Instead of one rigid slab, you get hundreds of individual units that interlock over a compacted base. When the ground moves in winter, the joints absorb it. When something needs fixing, you lift a few pavers, correct the problem and put the same pavers back.

We build paver projects of every size for homes and commercial properties across North and Central New Jersey.

Paver construction for driveways, patios and pool decks

Each use puts different demands on the pavement, so we build each one a little differently.

Paver driveways

A driveway carries thousands of pounds every day, plus turning tires that try to push pavers sideways. We excavate deeper, build a thicker base of compacted dense-graded aggregate, and use pavers made for vehicle loads. Patterns like herringbone interlock in more directions and hold up best where cars turn. A paver apron or border can also dress up an existing concrete or asphalt driveway without replacing the whole thing.

Paver patios

Patios carry foot traffic and furniture, so the base does not need to be as deep as a driveway, but it still has to be firm and well drained. We pitch the patio away from the house and plan the size around how you will use it: a dining table, a grill, a lounge area, or all three.

Paver pool decks

Around a pool, slip resistance, comfort underfoot and drainage matter most. Textured pavers in lighter tones work well. We pay close attention to the slope so splash water drains away from the pool and the house. For coping and stone details at the pool edge, our pool masonry team handles the work.

How we build a paver surface that stays flat

Pavers are only as good as what they sit on. Our installation steps:

  1. Layout and excavation. We mark the shape, check grades, and dig out soil and old material to the depth the use requires.
  2. Base installation. Dense-graded aggregate goes in and is compacted in layers with a plate compactor until it is solid.
  3. Bedding layer. A thin, screeded layer of bedding material gives each paver an even seat.
  4. Laying the pattern. Pavers are set by hand, with cuts made cleanly at edges, drains and curves.
  5. Edge restraint. A rigid edge holds the outer courses in place so the field cannot spread.
  6. Compaction and joint sand. We compact the pavers into the bedding, sweep in polymeric sand, compact again and activate the sand.

Skipping or thinning any of these steps is the main reason paver jobs sink, rut or develop wavy edges after a few winters.

Choosing pavers: colors, sizes and textures

Today’s pavers range from classic red brick tones to large gray slabs with a smooth, modern face. Things to think about:

  • Size. Smaller pavers look traditional and handle curves well. Larger units give a cleaner, contemporary look but need a very flat base.
  • Color blends. Blended colors hide dirt, tire marks and fallen leaves better than solid colors.
  • Texture. Tumbled pavers have softened edges and an aged look. Smooth faces are easier to sweep and shovel.
  • Borders. A contrasting border or soldier course frames the field and gives the edge a finished look.

We bring samples to your estimate so you can see them next to your house, not just in a brochure.

What drives the cost of a paver project

Cost depends mostly on square footage, removal of old surfaces, base depth, the paver you choose, and how complicated the pattern and cuts are. Driveways cost more per square foot than patios because of the heavier base. Sloped sites, poor soil and tight access add labor. We give you a written, itemized estimate so you can compare options clearly.

Caring for your pavers

Pavers need very little attention. Sweep them, rinse them off now and then, and top up joint sand if gaps appear. A sealer is optional; it can enrich color and make oil or food stains easier to clean. If a spot ever settles, it can be repaired invisibly, which is something a poured slab cannot offer.

FAQ

Paver Construction FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Are pavers strong enough for a driveway?

Yes, when the base is built for vehicles. Driveway pavers go over a deeper layer of compacted aggregate than a patio, and the herringbone pattern is often used because it resists shifting under turning tires.

Can pavers be installed over my old concrete or asphalt driveway?

In most cases we recommend removing the old surface. Overlaying can trap water and hide base problems that will show up later. We look at the existing driveway during the estimate and tell you what makes sense.

How do pavers hold up to snow plows and shoveling?

Well, as long as the plow blade has a rubber edge or is set slightly above the surface. A plastic shovel and a snow blower work fine. Because the edges are restrained and the joints are locked, normal snow removal does not loosen them.

Do paver pool decks get hot?

Lighter colored pavers stay noticeably cooler underfoot than dark ones. Many pavers also have a textured surface that helps with grip around wet areas. We can show you samples so you can pick a color and finish that suits a pool.

Will weeds grow between the pavers?

Polymeric sand greatly reduces weeds, but windblown seeds can still sprout in dirt that settles on top of the joints. A quick sweep and an occasional top-up of joint sand keep the surface clean.
