Hudson is the most densely built county in New Jersey, and its housing looks it. Brownstone and brick rowhouses line the streets of Hoboken and downtown Jersey City. Two and three-family frame and brick homes fill Bayonne, Kearny and Harrison. On top of the Palisades, Union City, West New York and North Bergen pack apartment buildings and attached houses onto narrow lots. Almost every job here involves shared walls, a city sidewalk and very little room to work, and we plan for that from the start.
Common Hudson County masonry projects

Stoops and front steps. The stoop is the face of a Hudson rowhouse, and it takes a beating from road salt, foot traffic and freeze-thaw. We repair cracked treads and crumbling sides, rebuild failing stoops on a solid base, and install new railings. For poured work, our concrete steps are formed to fit the building and the sidewalk grade.
Facade repointing and brick repair. Many buildings here are well over a hundred years old. Worn joints, loose bricks around windows and cracked lintels all let water into the wall. Tuckpointing and repointing with a compatible mortar restores the wall without damaging old brick.
Sidewalks and curbs. Street trees, utility cuts and age all lift and crack sidewalk slabs. We replace the damaged sections so they are level and safe for pedestrians.
Stucco and exterior walls. Plenty of Hudson multi-family homes have stucco or parged block walls that crack over time. Our stucco services cover patching, refinishing and new stucco.
Small backyard patios. A rowhouse yard may be only a few hundred square feet, but a well-built paver or concrete patio with proper drainage turns it into usable space.
Water and the waterfront
Much of Hudson sits close to the Hudson River, the Hackensack River and Newark Bay, and some neighborhoods were built on filled land. Low-lying sections of Hoboken, Jersey City, Secaucus and Kearny can see standing water during heavy storms, and a high water table pushes moisture into basements. When we work in these areas, we look at how water reaches the foundation and recommend basement waterproofing or crack repair where it will actually help, rather than relying on surface coatings alone.
Practical notes for city jobs
- Right of way permits. Work on sidewalks, curbs and stoops that extend toward the street, or placing a dumpster on the road, often requires a separate permit from the city. We find out what your municipality needs.
- Historic neighborhoods. Parts of Jersey City and Hoboken fall within historic districts, where facade and stoop changes may need approval.
- Neighbors share your walls. Repointing a party wall or rebuilding a shared stoop can affect the building next door. We plan the work so it is clean and contained.
- Parking and access. Most blocks have street parking only. We schedule deliveries and keep the work zone tidy so the street stays usable.
