Guttenberg occupies a narrow strip of the Palisades between West New York and North Bergen, and it is one of the most densely built towns in the country. Most residents live in attached rowhouses, two and three-family buildings and apartment towers, with the high-rises concentrated along the cliff edge. Lots are slim, front yards are often a few feet of concrete, and backyards are small courtyards. The town sits up on the ridge, but streets near the edge drop off sharply toward the river below.
Stoops and entrances
The front stoop on a Guttenberg rowhouse is used hard and sits right at the sidewalk, so it takes salt, shovels and constant foot traffic. We repair cracked treads and crumbling sides, and when a stoop has shifted we rebuild concrete steps or brick steps on a proper base. Stone veneer risers and bluestone treads give a plain entry a cleaner look.
Facades, brick and stucco

Older brick fronts need repointing when joints wear back, especially on parapets and around windows. Many buildings here have stucco fronts or side walls that crack over the years. Our stucco services cover patching, matching textures and full refinishing, with the damaged backing repaired first.
Sidewalks and courtyards
Public sidewalks in front of buildings crack and lift over time, and broken slabs are a trip hazard. We replace damaged sections to sit flush with the neighbors. In the back, a small paver or concrete courtyard with a drain turns a cramped space into a usable one.
Before you start
- Town permits. Stoops, sidewalks and work in the right of way often need approval. We find out what applies.
- Shared walls and stoops. Adjoining owners should know when work affects shared masonry.
- Access on narrow streets. Deliveries and debris pickup are scheduled around parking.
