Secaucus feels different from the rest of Hudson County. It sits in the Meadowlands, largely surrounded by marsh and the Hackensack River, and its residential neighborhoods are made up mostly of single-family homes with their own driveways, side yards and backyards. Capes, ranches, split-levels and newer colonials are common, along with some townhouse developments. The land is low and flat, and much of it is close to the water table. That gives homeowners more room for outdoor projects than in the rest of the county, but it also means the ground underneath needs respect.
Driveways on low ground

Driveways in Secaucus have to deal with soft, damp soil. A slab poured on a thin base often cracks and sinks within a few years. We build paver driveways and concrete or asphalt driveways on a deeper compacted base, with fabric where the soil calls for it, and pitch the finished surface toward the street.
Patios and pool decks
With real backyards to work with, Secaucus homeowners often ask for a patio with a dining area, a walkway around the house, or a new deck around the pool. We design patios and walkways in pavers, bluestone or stamped concrete. Around pools, we replace coping and build decks that drain away from the water and the house. Flat lots need a deliberate slope, since water will not find its own way off.
Steps and basements
Front steps on many homes are concrete stoops that have settled over time, and we rebuild them on a proper footing. With a high water table, damp basements are common. We look at gutters, grading and cracks first, and recommend basement waterproofing only when outside fixes are not enough.
Before you build
- Flood zones. Some Secaucus lots are in a flood zone, which can affect grading and structures.
- Drainage on flat lots. Every new surface needs a planned slope and an outlet.
- Town permits. Driveways, aprons and pool area work may require approval.
