East Newark is tiny, a borough of only a few blocks squeezed between Harrison and Kearny, facing Newark across the Passaic River. Its streets were built up during the area’s industrial years, and much of the housing still reflects that: two and three-family homes, attached and semi-attached houses, and older brick and frame buildings sitting close to the sidewalk on narrow lots. The ground is flat and low near the river. In a place this compact, nearly every job involves shared walls, a public sidewalk and careful planning.
Rebuilding brick stoops

The brick stoop is a fixture on many East Newark houses. Over time, salt eats the mortar, treads loosen and the side walls start to lean. We rebuild front steps in brick or concrete on a sound base, set bluestone or concrete treads, and anchor new railings into solid masonry. Pillars and cheek walls get rebuilt course by course so they line up with the house.
Repointing older walls
Brick fronts and chimneys in town have weathered many decades of storms. Worn joints let water into the wall, and frost then pushes brick faces off. Tuckpointing with a mortar matched to the age of the brick protects the wall without damaging it. Where brick is cracked or missing, we replace it as part of a broader masonry repair.
Walks, yards and basements
Front walks and the small yards behind East Newark homes are usually concrete. We tear out broken sections and pour new slabs pitched away from the house, or lay a small paver patio where there is room. Old foundation walls near the river can crack and seep, and we seal and repair them before moisture causes bigger trouble.
Working in a small borough
- Borough approvals. Stoop and sidewalk work may need a permit. We check before we schedule.
- Neighbors share the job. We tell adjoining owners when work affects a shared wall or stoop.
- Street space. Parking is tight, so deliveries and debris removal are planned carefully.
