North Bergen covers far more ground than the other North Hudson towns, and its terrain changes a lot along the way. Part of the township sits on top of the Palisades ridge, where blocks of one and two-family homes and apartment buildings line the streets. From there, the land falls steeply toward the west, and lower neighborhoods spread out toward the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands. Many houses are attached or built close together, and plenty of lots on the slopes have front walls, tall steps and driveways that climb from the street.
Walls and steps on the slope
On North Bergen’s hillside streets, a front yard is often held up by a wall along the sidewalk. When those walls bulge or crack, we rebuild them as retaining walls with a proper footing and drainage stone behind them. Tall front steps get the same care: new concrete steps on a solid base, finished in concrete, brick or stone veneer with railings that run the full height.
Stone veneer and brick
Stone veneer is a popular upgrade here for porches, front walls, garage faces and foundations. It covers worn concrete or block with a natural look, as long as the surface underneath is sound. Older brick homes and buildings also need repointing when the joints erode, and we match the mortar to the existing work.
Driveways and lower ground
Short, steep driveways on the ridge and longer ones in the lower neighborhoods both need a strong base and a clear path for water. We replace them in concrete, asphalt or pavers. Closer to the Meadowlands, the ground is lower and damp basements are more common, so we check grading and foundation cracks and recommend waterproofing only where it is needed.
