Union is a large township in the middle of Union County, made up almost entirely of established residential neighborhoods. Cape Cods, colonials, split levels and ranches from the first half to the middle of the twentieth century line its streets, typically on modest lots with a driveway along one side and a backyard behind. Those homes have stood up well, but the concrete around them has been through many decades of frost, salt and traffic.
New driveways and aprons
Cracked and heaving driveways are the most common project we see in Union. Many are original concrete or have been patched with asphalt over the years. We remove the old surface, rebuild the base and pour new concrete or asphalt driveways, or install pavers with a border for a more finished look. The apron where the drive meets the street is rebuilt to the township’s requirements.
Front steps

Steps on many Union homes are short, just three to five risers, but they get used every day and take the brunt of snow shoveling and ice melt. When they crack or start leaning, we rebuild them on a solid footing in concrete, brick or stone veneer, with bluestone or concrete treads and new railings.
Making the backyard usable
Smaller yards benefit most from good planning. A patio or walkway in pavers or stamped concrete can create an outdoor dining area, a path to the garage and a clean edge for planting beds. We pitch every patio away from the foundation and build on compacted stone so it stays flat.
Foundation cracks
Hairline cracks in foundation walls are common as houses age. Wider cracks, or any that let water in, should be repaired. Our crack repair service seals them from the inside or outside, and we check gutters and grading so the problem does not return.
Brick fronts and chimneys
Many Union homes have brick on the front facade, the chimney or the foundation. After decades of weather, mortar joints erode and water starts to get in. Repointing the joints, rebuilding loose chimney tops and replacing cracked crowns are smaller jobs that are worth doing before the damage spreads. We can often handle them in the same visit as steps or a walkway.
Garage slabs and side walkways are another common add-on. A cracked garage apron or a sunken side path can be replaced in the same pour as a new driveway, which saves a second mobilization and keeps the finish consistent.
Worth knowing
- Township permits. Driveway changes, steps and larger patios may need approval.
- Sidewalks. If the job touches the public walk, separate rules may apply.
- Utilities. A utility markout is arranged before any excavation.
