Pro One Construction has an office in Hawthorne, and a lot of our work is within a few minutes of it. The borough is mostly established neighborhoods of single family homes on modest lots, many of them built in the first half of the twentieth century. That mix shapes the projects we see most: front steps and stoops that have taken decades of freeze and thaw, older brick that needs repointing, and backyards that are ready for a real patio.
Front steps, stoops and walkways
Concrete and brick steps are the most common request we get in Hawthorne. Older steps often settle away from the house, crack at the treads or lose mortar at the joints. Patching only buys a season or two. When the base has moved, the lasting fix is to rebuild on a proper footing. We build concrete steps in poured concrete, brick or stone veneer, often with bluestone treads and new railings, and tie in a new walkway to the sidewalk.
Patios and driveways on smaller lots

Many Hawthorne yards are compact, so a good layout matters more than size. A paver patio with a short walkway to the back door, a seating wall or a small fire pit can turn an unused lawn into a space you actually use. We plan the base and slope so water runs away from the house. Our paver patios and driveways are built on compacted stone with edge restraint so they stay flat.
Driveways are the other big one. Narrow driveways on busy blocks see heavy daily use. We replace cracked concrete and asphalt and install paver driveways that hold up to daily traffic.
Brick, block and foundations
Older brick houses and garages in town often show worn mortar joints, spalled brick or cracked parging on the foundation. Tuckpointing restores the joints before water gets behind the face of the wall. If you see dampness in the basement, we also look at grading, gutters and the foundation itself, and offer foundation waterproofing when it is needed.
Before you start
- Permits. The borough may require approval for steps, walls, driveway aprons and other structural work. We find out what applies and take care of it.
- Sidewalks and aprons. Work that touches the public sidewalk can have its own rules. We check before we schedule.
- Neighbors close by. On tight lots we plan access, deliveries and cleanup so the job does not take over the block.
Hawthorne sits next to Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, Prospect Park and North Haledon, and we work in all of them. See the rest of Passaic County or nearby Clifton.
