North Haledon sits on higher ground above Haledon and Paterson, and it feels different from its neighbors to the south. Streets are quieter and more suburban, homes are mostly single-family ranches, split-levels, colonials and newer custom builds, and lots are generally larger. Much of the borough is hilly, so a typical backyard has room to work with but rarely sits flat. That is why the projects we see here lean toward outdoor living spaces built around a slope.
Patios designed for the grade
A paver patio on a sloped yard has to start with the base. We cut or fill to set a level pad, compact the stone in lifts, and pitch the finished surface gently away from the house. On steeper lots, a two-level patio with steps between the tiers often uses the space better than one big slab. Curved borders and soldier courses give the edge a finished look.
Walls, fire features and entries

A seating wall along the edge of a patio does double duty, holding soil and giving guests a place to sit. Taller retaining walls get drainage aggregate and a pipe so frost and water do not push them out of line. Many North Haledon homeowners add a stone fire pit or outdoor fireplace as the focal point of the yard.
Out front, we rebuild entries in stacked stone or brick with bluestone landings, and we replace long driveways in concrete, asphalt or pavers.
Before you start
- Think in phases. Large yards can be built in stages. We design the full plan first so later phases tie in.
- Plan lighting early. Wiring for step and wall lights is easiest to run before the pavers go down.
- Respect the runoff. Hard surfaces on a slope send water somewhere. We decide where before we build.
North Haledon borders Haledon and Wayne, and it is one of many Passaic County towns we serve. When you are ready to plan the yard, schedule a free estimate and we will walk it with you.
