Woodland Park was known as West Paterson until it took its current name, and it sits between Little Falls, Totowa, Paterson and the Garret Mountain ridge. The borough has a little of everything: older single-family homes on the flatter streets near the river, postwar capes and split-levels, and townhouse and condo communities climbing the hillsides. Elevation changes quickly here, and that slope is the starting point for most outdoor projects.
Raised terraces and walls
On a lot that drops away behind the house, a ground-level patio is not always possible. A raised terrace held by a block retaining wall, with steps built right into the wall, creates flat living space at the level of the back door. We build these walls on a compacted footing with drainage stone behind every course so frost and runoff cannot push them out.
Stamped and plain concrete

Many Woodland Park homeowners like the look of stone without the cost of natural stone, which makes stamped concrete a natural fit. Our concrete services include stamped walks and patios, broom-finished driveways and new front steps. We set control joints, slope every slab away from the house and seal stamped surfaces when the job is finished.
Steps, patios and basements
Front steps on sloped lots are often tall and exposed to the weather. We rebuild them on solid footings with railings and, where needed, a landing. Paver patios fit well in the flatter backyards near the river. Down in those lower areas, damp basements are common, so we look at grading and downspouts first and offer waterproofing when that is not enough.
What to think about first
- Slope and height. Wall height affects design and borough approval, so we measure before quoting.
- Condo and townhouse rules. If you live in an association, check what changes are allowed outside.
- Runoff on hills. New hard surfaces must send water somewhere safe, not to the neighbor below.
