Prospect Park covers a small area between Hawthorne, Haledon and Paterson, and it packs a lot of homes into it. Most are older one and two-family houses set close together, with short front yards, narrow side yards and backyards measured in feet rather than acres. The ground is mostly gentle, rising slightly toward Haledon. With so little room, every masonry project here is about fitting good work into a tight footprint.
Stoops and front walks
The short distance from sidewalk to door means a Prospect Park stoop is often the main feature of the house. After decades of salt and shoveling, treads chip, mortar joints open and the stoop can tilt. We rebuild concrete steps and brick stoops on a solid base, top them with bluestone where it suits the house, and pour a fresh concrete walk to the sidewalk.
Making a small yard work

Side entries and backyards are where space gets really tight. A narrow paver walk along the side of the house replaces muddy grass or broken concrete, and a compact patio out back turns a forgotten corner into a place for a table and grill. Our patios and walkways are built on compacted stone and pitched so runoff does not end up against a foundation a few feet away.
Brick that has seen a lot of winters
Older brick fronts, chimneys and garage walls in town often need repointing. Tuckpointing replaces worn mortar before water gets into the wall, and we reset loose brick at the same time.
Practical points
- Borough permits. Steps and other structural work may need approval. We check first.
- Neighbors are close. We protect fences, siding and plantings next door during demolition.
- Sidewalk pieces. A cracked public sidewalk slab in front can be replaced at the same time as the stoop.
