Bluestone stepping stones in gravel between two paver patio areas

Hopewell Township is the largest municipality in Mercer County by area, and most of it is still open country: farmland, horse properties, preserved land and woods. The Sourland Mountain ridge rises along its northern edge, where boulders and rocky soil are common, and the township reaches west to the Delaware River. It surrounds both Hopewell Borough and Pennington, which are separate towns. Homes range from old farmhouses and stone houses to newer colonials and custom builds on large, often wooded lots. With that much space, homeowners here tend to think in terms of whole outdoor layouts, not single repairs.

Terraces and patios with a country feel

A large lot can handle a mix of surfaces. A paver or bluestone patio near the house gives a firm base for dining, while gravel areas with bluestone stepping stones lead out into the yard and let rain soak in. Our hardscaping projects often combine patios, walks, seating walls and a stone fire pit into one design.

Stone entries and walls

Gray stacked stone entryway with bluestone landing, steps and walkway

Stone suits the rural character of the township. We build entries with stacked stone faces and bluestone landings, face foundations and steps in stone veneer, and lay natural stone masonry for walls and pillars. On sloped lots near the ridge, retaining walls with drainage behind them create level space, and boulders dug up on site can often be put to use.

Long driveways and farm lanes

Long driveways take a lot of punishment from weather and heavy vehicles. We rebuild bases, replace failing surfaces in concrete or asphalt, and add aprons and edging. Proper drainage along a long drive keeps it from washing out at low points.

Things to check early

  • Preserved land and setbacks. Some properties have easements or farmland preservation limits.
  • Rocky ground. Near the Sourland ridge, excavation can hit boulders and rock.
  • Township permits. Walls, driveways and larger patios may need approval.

FAQ

Hopewell Township, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Is Hopewell Township the same as Hopewell Borough or Pennington?

No. Hopewell Borough and Pennington are separate boroughs that sit inside Hopewell Township, and each has its own building department. This page covers the township. We work in all three.

We have a big yard in Hopewell Township. Where should we start?

Start with a full plan, even if you build in phases. We map the patio, walks, walls and fire feature together so each phase ties into the next and drainage works across the whole yard.

Our property has big boulders. Can they be used in the design?

Often, yes. Large stones can become accents, steps or part of a wall. We look at what you have on site and suggest where it makes sense to reuse it.

Are gravel patios a good choice here?

They can be. Gravel areas with bluestone stepping stones drain freely and suit a country setting. We pair them with a paved area for furniture that needs a firm, level surface.
