Hamburg is a compact borough in northeastern Sussex County, bordered by Hardyston and set in the valley of the Wallkill River. It has two distinct kinds of housing. Around the older village center you find older single-family homes on modest lots with short front walks and porches. Elsewhere in the borough are newer townhouse and condo neighborhoods, many with association rules about exterior changes. The work we do follows that split.

Flatwork that drains

Valley ground tends to stay wet after heavy rain and snowmelt, and low spots near a river valley can hold water. That makes slope the most important detail on any walk, patio or slab. A walkway that pitches back toward the house sends water straight to the foundation, and a slab with a birdbath will ice over all winter. We set forms with a steady fall away from the building and compact the base so it does not settle into a new low spot. If your property is near the river, flood zone rules may apply, and we check before planning.

Front walks and steps on village homes

Pro One crew installing a new front walkway at a brick ranch home

On the older streets, front walks are short and visible. Cracked, heaved concrete is the usual complaint. We remove it and install new walkways in broom-finished concrete, stamped concrete or pavers. When the steps at the end of the walk are also failing, we rebuild them on a frost-depth footing as part of the same job. Our concrete steps can be finished in brick, stone or plain concrete with new railings.

Repairs that buy time

Not every slab needs to go. Hairline cracks can be sealed, and a sound slab with a worn surface can often be resurfaced. We will tell you honestly when repair makes sense and when it only delays a replacement.

Before the work starts

  • Check association rules if you live in a townhouse community.
  • Note downspouts that empty onto walks or patios.
  • Clear cars from shared parking areas on pour days.
  • Expect the borough to review structural steps and walls.

Hamburg is also close to Franklin, and we cover the whole of Sussex County. Need a new walk or steps? Get a free estimate and we will measure on site.

FAQ

Hamburg, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Do you work in Hamburg townhouse communities?

Yes. Many townhouse and condo associations control exterior changes, so we ask for the association guidelines first and can supply drawings and material samples for the approval request.

Water pools on our walkway every spring. Can it be fixed without replacing it?

Sometimes. If only a section has settled, it can be replaced and regraded. If the whole walk pitches toward the house, a new walk with the right slope is the better fix.

Is Hamburg part of Hardyston?

No. Hamburg is a separate borough with its own building department, although it borders Hardyston. We check which municipality covers the address before planning permits.
