Sparta is a township of hills, woods and water. Lake Mohawk and a number of smaller lakes are surrounded by homes on steep, compact lots, while newer neighborhoods spread out over larger wooded parcels. Almost every property has some grade to it, and that one fact drives most of the hardscape work Pro One Construction does here.
Turning hillsides into usable space

A slope that runs right up to the back door leaves little room for a table, a grill or kids. The answer is usually a retaining wall that holds back the hill and creates a flat terrace. We build in segmental block or natural stone, with drainage stone and an outlet pipe behind the wall so water does not build up pressure. On taller grades, two shorter walls with a planting bed between them often look better and are easier to build well than one high wall.
Stone steps connect the levels. Bluestone treads on stacked stone risers fit the wooded setting and give solid footing in wet or icy weather. Where a path runs along the side of the house, low landings every few steps make the walk easier to manage while carrying groceries or firewood.
Patios with a view of the woods or the water
Once there is level ground, a patio follows. Bluestone, natural stone and pavers all work well here. Our patios and walkways start with an excavated, compacted base thick enough for deep frost, and we pitch every surface so runoff goes around the house rather than toward it. A stone fire pit or outdoor fireplace makes the space useful on cool evenings in spring and fall.
Long driveways and steep aprons
Many Sparta driveways climb or drop sharply from the road. Plows, salt and snowmelt take a toll, and the lowest section often cracks or washes out first. We rebuild failing areas and pour or pave new driveways with a base and pitch planned for the grade. Paver or stone aprons and parking pads are a clean way to finish the area near the house.
Questions to settle up front
- Wells and septic. Plenty of Sparta homes rely on both. Mark the tank, field and well head so we can keep heavy equipment clear.
- Lake rules. Lakefront and lake community lots may have association rules and environmental limits near the water.
- Township permits. Retaining walls above a certain height, new steps and some driveway work may need approval from the township building department.
- Tree roots. Mature trees near a wall or patio affect layout. We plan around the ones you want to keep.
