Montague Township sits at the very top of New Jersey, where the state meets both New York and Pennsylvania along the Delaware River. A large share of the township is public land, including state park and national recreation area land, so homes are spread out along a few main roads, on wooded ridges and in the river valley below. It is about as far from the city as our service area goes, and the houses reflect that: rural homes, cabins turned year-round residences and older houses with fieldstone foundations and wood-burning chimneys.
Natural stone fits the setting
In a place surrounded by forest and river, poured concrete can look out of place. Many owners here want stone instead. We build stone masonry steps, low walls and veneer that suit a wooded lot, and we use bluestone for treads, landings and walks. It is a durable local favorite that handles freeze and thaw well when it is set on a proper base.
Walks through lawn and woods

A curved bluestone walk from the driveway to the door, or a set of stone steps off a back porch, makes a rural house feel finished. We lay walkways on compacted gravel so they stay flat through the winter, and we leave gaps or gravel joints where water needs to drain through.
Foundations and chimneys on older homes
Older river valley houses often have stone or block foundations that have taken decades of wet ground and frost. We repoint, rebuild weak sections and correct the grading around them. Chimneys get hard use here because many homes heat with wood. A cracked crown or open joints at the top let water into the flue, so we rebuild crowns and repoint or rebuild the stack from the roofline up.
Planning at the edge of the map
- Site visits. Sending photos and measurements first helps us plan the trip.
- Flood and public land rules. Ask the township if your lot is near the river or borders park land.
- Well and septic. Mark both before any digging.
- Season. The building season is short at this latitude, so early booking matters.
Montague borders Sandyston and Wantage, and we work throughout Sussex County. Send us a few photos and request a free estimate.
