Ogdensburg is a small borough in the Highlands of Sussex County, best known as the home of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum on the site of a former zinc mine. The town is built on hills. Many streets climb or curve along the slope, and houses sit either well above the road or tucked below it. Most homes are older single-family houses on modest lots, with some newer construction mixed in. On this terrain, getting safely from the street to the front door is the project we hear about most.

Steps on a steep lot

When a house sits high above the sidewalk, the steps carry a lot of load and a lot of foot traffic. Older sets often have uneven risers, crumbling edges and railings that wiggle. We rebuild concrete steps with consistent riser heights and landings that break up a long climb. Footings go below frost depth, and railings are set into solid masonry or concrete so they stay firm. Finishes range from plain concrete to brick, stone veneer or bluestone treads.

Low walls along the street

Hillside yards often need a low wall at the sidewalk to hold the lawn back. Many old walls were dry-laid or built without drainage, and they lean outward after years of wet soil and frost. A rebuilt retaining wall with drainage stone and a footing on firm ground stays put. Steps can pass through the wall, so the two are built as one.

Rock in the way

The Highlands are rocky, and Ogdensburg is no exception. Ledge or large boulders can sit just under the lawn. We plan footings around what we find, and in some cases set the base right on solid rock.

Things to think about

  • Water from above. Runoff from uphill properties and the street can wash out a base. We plan where it goes.
  • Sidewalk work. Steps and walls that meet the public sidewalk may need approval from the borough.
  • Delivery access. Steep driveways can limit what trucks can reach, so we plan staging ahead.
  • Winter safety. Textured treads and good railings matter on a hillside entry.

FAQ

Ogdensburg, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Our house sits well above the street. How many steps do we need?

That depends on the rise from the sidewalk to the door. We measure the total height and lay out a run with comfortable, even risers, adding a landing when the climb is long.

The low wall along our front yard is leaning. Can it be fixed?

If only the top courses have moved, they can sometimes be reset. If the whole wall leans, it usually needs to be rebuilt with drainage stone behind it so water stops pushing it out.

Can railings be added to old concrete steps?

Yes, if the concrete is sound. If the steps are cracked near the edges, anchors will not hold well, and rebuilding the steps first is the safer option.
