Essex Fells is a small, almost entirely residential borough in the western part of Essex County. It is known for its heavily wooded streets and its older homes, many in Tudor, colonial revival and other early twentieth century styles, set back on large lots under tall trees. There is little commercial development, so the feel of the place comes from the houses, the landscaping and the stonework that ties them together.
Natural stone that suits older architecture
Homes like these were often built with stone foundations, stone or brick chimneys and stone garden walls. When new work goes in next to them, it should look like it belongs. We build stone masonry in natural stone and quality veneer, choosing colors and joint styles that sit comfortably beside the original.
Walkways under the trees

Long front walks are common here, and bluestone is a natural fit. Under a heavy canopy, though, walkways stay damp and roots push from below. We set bluestone walkways on a well drained stone base, route them around large roots where possible and choose a thermal finish that offers better footing in shade.
Garden walls and gentle grades
Lots in the borough are not flat everywhere, and older dry-laid or mortared walls often hold beds and terraces. Typical requests include:
- resetting and repointing a leaning stone garden wall
- adding a low wall to level a terrace beside the house
- building stone steps between two levels of the yard
- edging a driveway with natural stone curbing
Chimneys and restoration
Tall chimneys on older homes take the worst of the weather. We repair crowns, repoint and rebuild tops, using mortar that is compatible with older brick and stone.
Planning a project here
The borough building department reviews many exterior projects, and some changes may need zoning approval. Large trees, long driveways and buried utility lines all affect access, so we walk the full route our equipment will take at the estimate.
Essex Fells sits between Caldwell and Roseland, and we serve the wider Essex County area. Request a free estimate to talk through your stone project.
