Nutley is a township of established neighborhoods, many built out in the decades before and after World War II. Cape Cods, colonials, and two family houses line its streets, often on narrow lots with a single driveway along one side. The Passaic River forms the eastern edge of town. This is the kind of place where steps, driveways and brick get used hard every day, and where good repairs make a visible difference.
Rebuilding front steps

On many Nutley homes, the front steps sit close to the sidewalk and are the first thing people notice. Common problems are cracked treads, steps pulling away from the house, and loose brick on the side walls. Patching rarely lasts when the footing has moved. We rebuild concrete steps on a proper base, finished in concrete, brick or block with bluestone or concrete treads and new black railings.
Driveways and walkways on tight lots
Narrow driveways see daily cars, snow shovels and plows, and they crack and heave over time. We replace them in concrete, asphalt or pavers and rebuild the apron to meet the street cleanly. Side walkways and front walks can be redone at the same time. A paver or stamped concrete patio or walkway out back can make a small yard much more usable.
Brick, mortar and basements
Older brick fronts, chimneys and foundation walls slowly lose mortar to weather. Once joints open, water gets in and freezes. Tuckpointing replaces that mortar before the brick itself is damaged. We also refresh cracked parging on block foundations.
Damp basements are a frequent concern in older homes here, especially on lower streets. We look at the outside first, then the walls, and recommend basement waterproofing only when the source is through the foundation.
Small backyards, done well
Nutley backyards are often narrow, with a detached garage at the back and a fence on each side. A good layout makes the most of every foot. We plan a patio that steps down from the back door, a path to the garage and planting space along the fences. Paver borders and simple seating walls help define each area without crowding the yard, and correct pitch keeps rain off the house.
Good to know
- Township permits. Steps, driveway aprons and walls can need approval. We confirm what your project needs.
- Shared driveways. If you share a drive, talk with your neighbor before work starts.
- Sidewalk work. Changes that touch the public sidewalk may have separate rules, which we check ahead of time.
