Red brick paver entry with bluestone-capped brick steps at a Tudor-style home

Glen Ridge is a narrow borough tucked between Montclair and Bloomfield. It is best known for its gas street lamps and for streets of Victorian, Tudor, shingle style and colonial revival homes, many from the late 1800s and early 1900s. A large share of the borough falls within a designated historic district. That combination of older materials and design oversight shapes how masonry work should be approached.

Restoration, not just repair

Original brick and stone on these houses was laid with softer brick and lime-rich mortar. Those materials move with the seasons and let water escape. Patching with modern, hard mortar often traps moisture and damages the brick around it. Our historic masonry restoration work begins by studying the existing wall, testing mortar color and texture, and then repointing by hand with a compatible mix.

Entries that match the house

Red brick steps with thick bluestone treads leading to a red front door

Brick risers and thick bluestone treads are a hallmark of older Glen Ridge entries. When they shift or crack, we rebuild the base and reuse original stone where it is sound. New front steps are detailed to look like they were always there, with railings chosen to suit the period.

Chimneys and porches

Tall chimneys and masonry porch piers are among the most exposed parts of these homes. Common issues we see:

  • crumbling joints near the top of a chimney
  • cracked or missing chimney crowns
  • porch piers leaning as their footings settle
  • spalled brick where gutters overflow

We repair and rebuild with matching brick and lime-compatible mortar.

Walkways and small gardens

Lots here range from modest to generous, and many yards are shaded by mature trees. Bluestone and brick walkways and small patios suit the setting better than bright, modern pavers.

Before work begins

Allow time for historic review if your property is in the district. Matching brick and natural stone can take longer to source. Lime mortar cures best in mild weather, so spring through fall is ideal.

FAQ

Glen Ridge, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Do exterior masonry changes in Glen Ridge need historic review?

Many do. A large part of the borough is a designated historic district, so changes to steps, walkways, walls or chimneys may need review before a permit is issued. We provide the material details and photos the application needs.

Why use lime mortar instead of regular mortar on our Glen Ridge house?

Older brick is softer than modern brick. A lime-based mortar stays softer than the brick, so the joints take the wear instead of the brick faces. Hard cement mortar can crack and spall old brick over time.

Can you rebuild our front steps but keep the original bluestone?

In most cases. We number and lift the treads, rebuild the base and risers, then reset the original stone. Badly cracked pieces can be replaced with new bluestone cut to match.
