North Caldwell is a residential borough in the northern part of Essex County, next to Caldwell and West Caldwell. Compared with its neighbors, it has more hillside streets and larger lots, with a good share of homes built in the later part of the twentieth century or more recently: big colonials, contemporary houses and expanded ranches. Many backyards fall away from the house, and plenty have room for a pool.
Building on a slope
On hilly lots, the yard often needs to be shaped before it can be used. A retaining wall in segmental block or stone, built on a compacted base with drainage behind it, creates flat ground for a patio, lawn or play area. Where the drop is large, two shorter terraced walls are often better than one tall one.
Pool decks and coping

Pools here take a lot of sun, chlorine and frost. When coping cracks or the deck heaves, we remove it and rebuild with stone or paver coping and a deck in pavers or stamped concrete through our pool masonry service. The deck gets pitched away from the pool and the house so rain and splash water drain off.
Outdoor living on a larger lot
With room to work, North Caldwell homeowners often plan the whole yard. A typical layout might include:
- a main patio off the kitchen for dining
- a fire pit or outdoor fireplace on a lower level
- stone steps linking the terraces
- a walkway around the house to the driveway
Our hardscaping projects tie these pieces together with consistent materials and lighting.
Entries and driveways
Long, sloped driveways and raised front entries are common. We build stone veneer porches and steps with modern or traditional railings, and replace driveways with attention to pitch and drainage.
Before you build
The borough building department may require permits for walls, pool work and patios, and taller walls may need an engineered design.
