Livingston is a largely residential township in western Essex County, made up mostly of single family homes on suburban lots. Ranches, split levels and colonials from the middle of the last century sit next to houses that have been expanded or rebuilt more recently. With more yard to work with than in the older towns to the east, homeowners here often plan the outdoor space as carefully as the inside of the house.
Outdoor living, planned as one project
A patio is usually where it starts, but the best results come from looking at the whole yard together. Our hardscaping projects in Livingston often include a main patio for dining, a lower seating area, a walkway to the driveway and lighting built into steps and walls. We build every paver patio on a compacted stone base with edge restraint and a slope that carries water away from the foundation.
Fireplaces, fire pits and seating walls
An outdoor fireplace or a fire pit stretches the patio season into late fall. We build them in natural stone or veneer to suit the house, with seating walls that double as extra seating for guests. Placement matters: we look at the wind, the view from inside and the distance to the house and trees before we set the footing for any fire pit or outdoor fireplace.
Pool surrounds

In-ground pools are common on larger Livingston lots, and the coping and deck around them take a beating from sun, chlorine and frost. We replace failing coping and build new decks in pavers, natural stone or stamped concrete, with a finish that is comfortable underfoot and not slippery when wet.
Front of the house
The entry and driveway shape a first impression. We replace worn driveways in pavers, concrete or asphalt, and build front landings and steps in stacked stone or brick with bluestone treads. A matching walkway ties the driveway to the door.
Materials that age well
Pavers, natural stone and stamped concrete all have a place in a Livingston yard. Pavers are easy to repair in small sections and come in many colors. Bluestone and other natural stone give a more traditional finish next to brick or stone fronts. Stamped concrete covers large areas in one pour. We bring samples to the estimate so you can see each option against your house in daylight.
Planning notes
- Township approvals. Patios, walls, pool work and driveway changes can need a permit or zoning review. We check before the design is final.
- Lot coverage. Larger hardscape projects can count toward limits on impervious surface. It is worth confirming early.
- Book ahead. Spring is busy for outdoor work, so an estimate in winter gives you the most scheduling options.
