West Caldwell is a suburban township in northwestern Essex County, between Caldwell and Fairfield. Most of its homes were built after World War II: ranches, Cape Cods, split levels and colonials on regular suburban lots with lawns front and back. The terrain is generally gentle, with flatter ground toward the Fairfield side. Since much of the housing stock is from the same era, many homes reach the same point at once: original walks, steps and driveways that have worn out together.
