Bedminster is a Somerset Hills township with two very different sides. Much of it is rolling country, with horse farms, hedgerows, long gravel lanes and houses set far back from the road. Other parts hold planned communities of townhouses and condominiums built in the late twentieth century, with small private patios and shared green space. A good hardscape plan in Bedminster starts by recognizing which of those two worlds your home belongs to.
Country properties and long approaches
On larger lots, the details that matter most are scale and drainage. A patio that looks generous on a quarter acre can look lost behind a big farmhouse, so we size terraces, steps and walks to the house and the view. Open fields shed a lot of water toward buildings after heavy rain, which means the base under a patio needs to be deep and the pitch needs to carry runoff somewhere harmless. Our stone masonry crew builds low fieldstone style walls, entry pillars and garden walls that suit the rural look, and we set bluestone walks that age well against lawn and gravel.
Courtyards and townhouse patios

In the townhouse communities, the space is tight and the rules are firm. Most associations control what can change outside, so a small project often needs approval first. A compact paver patio or walkway can still make a big difference: a wider landing at the slider, a few stepping stones in gravel, or a patio that finally drains away from the unit instead of toward it.
Pools, fire features and gathering spots
Larger Bedminster yards often have room for a pool deck, a stone fire pit, or both. We build coping and pool surrounds, and fire pits and outdoor fireplaces placed at a safe distance from the house and trees.
What to sort out early
- Which approvals apply. The township building department handles permits, and many communities also have an association review.
- Access across the property. Long driveways and soft lawns need a plan for deliveries.
- Existing walls and plantings. Tell us what must stay untouched so we can work around it.
- Septic and utility lines. On rural lots we mark these before any excavation.
