Far Hills is one of the smallest boroughs in Somerset County, and one of the most rural. It is best known for horse country and the annual steeplechase races held there each fall. Outside a short stretch of village homes near the train station, the borough is made up of large estate properties with long drives, open pasture, woodland and old stone walls that have marked field edges for generations. Masonry here is less about adding something new and more about keeping a long established landscape intact.
Old fieldstone walls
Many properties have miles of low stone walls along fields, lanes and gardens. Frost, tree roots and the odd tractor take them apart a few stones at a time. We rebuild fallen sections using the original stone wherever we can, matching the coursing and batter so the repair disappears into the rest of the wall. New stone masonry such as entry walls, curbing and garden terraces is laid to look like it belongs beside the old work.
Walks and terraces in bluestone

Bluestone is the natural material for walks, landings and terraces on older estate homes. We set it on a compacted base, in natural cleft or thermal finish, as a formal rectangular pattern or a looser random layout. Curved walkways that follow the lawn tend to suit the setting better than straight concrete.
Chimneys and older brick
Older houses and outbuildings in Far Hills often have tall brick or stone chimneys that need crowns, flashing work or repointing. We handle historic masonry restoration carefully, using mortar suited to the original brick or stone rather than a hard modern mix that can damage it.
On a large property, plan for
- Access and staging. We agree on where trucks and stone are staged so lawns and pasture are protected.
- Event traffic. Scheduling around the busy race weekend keeps deliveries simple.
- Borough approvals. The building department reviews structural work, and historic rules may apply to some homes.
- Wildlife and livestock. Let us know about animals on site so fencing and gates stay secure.
