Millstone is one of the smallest municipalities in New Jersey, a quiet borough strung along a road above the Millstone River on the edge of Hillsborough. Many of its homes are well over a century old: clapboard farmhouses, brick and stone foundations, porches and chimneys that have seen countless winters. Much of the borough is a historic district, which means repairs are judged not only by how well they hold up but by how well they fit in.
Repointing and repairing old masonry
Old brick and stone foundations, chimneys and garden walls usually fail at the joints first. Water gets into crumbling mortar, freezes and pushes stone and brick loose. Our historic masonry restoration work starts by raking out the failed joints by hand, then repointing with a mortar matched in strength, color and texture to the original. Matching the joint profile matters as much as the color.
Steps and stoops with a period look

A new set of poured concrete steps can look out of place on a farmhouse. We build steps on a solid core and footing, then finish them in brick or stone with thick bluestone treads, so they are safe and sound but still look like they belong. Simple iron style railings keep the look restrained.
Walks, paths and gardens
Older lots in Millstone are often long and narrow, with gardens, outbuildings and mature trees. A bluestone or brick walk that follows the existing path, rather than a new straight line, tends to fit best. We set it on a compacted base so it stays flat without heavy edging.
Working in a small historic borough
- Historic review. Visible exterior changes may need approval before work starts.
- Near the river. Low parts of some lots may sit in a flood hazard area.
- Careful access. Narrow drives and old trees mean smaller equipment and hand work.
- Salvage. We can reuse sound old brick or stone where it is practical.
Millstone sits beside Hillsborough, with Franklin Township across the river, and both are part of our Somerset County service area. Request a free estimate and we will look at the masonry with you before suggesting anything.
