Warren Township lies in the valley and slopes between the first and second Watchung ridges, a suburban township known for large homes on wooded lots. Most neighborhoods were built from the 1970s onward, and many custom homes sit on an acre or more, set back from winding roads. The terrain is the defining factor: lots slope, sometimes steeply, and basalt rock often sits a short distance below the topsoil. That combination makes Warren one of the more interesting towns in the county for hardscape design.
Terraces instead of one flat patio

On a sloped lot, one big patio rarely fits. We often build two or three terraces stepping down the hill, each held by a retaining wall and linked by wide steps. Walls get a compacted footing, drainage stone and pipe behind them, and reinforcement when height requires it. Where rock is near the surface, we design around it.
Pools and outdoor living
Many Warren homes have inground pools, and the deck and coping are often original and tired. Our pool masonry work covers coping, decks in pavers or stamped concrete, and stone walls around the pool. Nearby, a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, seat walls and step lights turn the yard into a place to spend evenings.
Grand entries and driveways
Front entries on larger homes deserve more than a builder grade stoop. We build wide landings in bluestone with stacked stone or brick faces, plus walkways and driveway borders that connect them. Long, sloped driveways need careful pitch and edge drainage so they do not wash out.
Planning a hillside project
- Engineering. Taller walls usually need an engineered design and a township permit.
- Runoff. New hard surfaces change how water moves downhill, so we plan drainage from the start.
- Trees. Wooded lots need care around roots of trees you want to keep.
- Phasing. Large projects can be built in stages with a full plan up front.
