Hillsborough is one of the largest townships in Somerset County by area, and it covers a lot of ground in more ways than one. The northern and central parts are mostly subdivisions built from the 1970s through the 2000s, with colonials and contemporaries on half acre to acre lots. Farms and preserved open space fill the gaps, and the southern edge climbs into the wooded Sourland Mountain, where soil is thin and rock sits close to the surface. Most families here have space to spread out, and a backyard that is still mostly lawn.
Building out the backyard

With this much room, the best Hillsborough patios are planned as a whole outdoor area rather than a single slab. We lay out paver patios with zones for dining, lounging and a fire feature, connected by walkways to the driveway and garden. Seat walls double as edging and extra seating. Low voltage lights in steps and walls make the space usable after dark.
Pools and pool surrounds
Inground pools are common in town, and many original decks are tired concrete with failing coping. We replace coping and decks in pavers, stamped concrete or natural stone, and handle the pool masonry around them, from raised walls to steps into the yard. Decks are pitched away from the water to drains or lawn.
Driveways, slopes and rocky ground
Long driveways on newer homes are often ready for replacement, and we install concrete, asphalt or paver drives with a solid base for the soil. Near the Sourlands, slopes and ledge rock change the approach: retaining walls create level terraces, and we adjust excavation where rock comes up.
Before we break ground
- Township and HOA approvals. Pools, larger patios and walls may need both.
- Utilities and septic. We mark lines before digging, especially on rural lots.
- Soil type. Heavy clay in the lowlands and rock near the mountain both affect base depth.
