South Bound Brook is a small borough on the south bank of the Raritan River, directly across from Bound Brook and bordered by Franklin Township. It is a quiet, residential place, with the Delaware and Raritan Canal and its towpath running along the river side of town. Homes are mostly older single family houses, capes and bungalows on narrow lots, with short driveways, modest backyards and side yards just wide enough for a walk. The land is fairly flat near the river and rises gradually as you move away from it.
Making the most of a small backyard
Backyards here are not large, and that is exactly why a good layout matters. A compact paver patio with a clean border can hold a table and grill without crowding the yard. We set the base and pitch so water runs toward the lawn instead of toward the house or a neighbor, and we plan steps down from the back door so they land comfortably on the patio.
Side yards and walkways

The narrow strip between the house and the property line is often muddy, uneven or broken concrete. A paver or concrete walkway there gives you a clean path to the backyard and helps carry roof water away from the foundation. On tight lots we plan around fences, meters and window wells.
Steps, stoops and driveways
Concrete stoops and short driveways on older homes wear out from salt, frost and age. Where the concrete is still sound, concrete resurfacing can refresh it. Where steps have cracked through or a driveway has sunk, we remove it and rebuild on a proper base.
Before you plan
- River and canal areas. Some lots near the water may be in a flood hazard area, so check before planning new hardscape.
- Borough approvals. Steps, driveway aprons and sidewalk work may need a permit.
- Neighbors close by. On small lots we coordinate deliveries and keep the work area tidy.
