Rocky Hill is a tiny borough on a rise above the Millstone River, completely surrounded by Montgomery Township. Much of the town lies in a historic district, with homes ranging from colonial era houses to Victorians and early twentieth century cottages, many close to the sidewalk on small lots shaded by old trees. The masonry here is old: soft brick, lime mortar, stone foundations and chimneys that were built long before modern materials. Getting the details right matters more than speed.
Old brick needs a gentle hand
The most common mistake on older Rocky Hill homes is repointing with a hard, modern cement mortar. It looks fine at first, then traps moisture and causes the softer brick faces to crack and pop off. Our historic masonry restoration uses mortars matched to the original in strength and color, joints raked out carefully, and replacement brick or stone chosen to blend with what is there.
Steps and front entries

Front steps in town are often small, close to the street and worn by many years of use. We rebuild them on a sound footing, finish them in brick with bluestone treads, and keep the size and proportions in keeping with the house. Simple, slim railings tend to look right on older facades.
Walks and garden paths
Brick and bluestone walkways suit Rocky Hill better than broad slabs of new concrete. We lay them on a compacted base, with care around the roots of mature trees, and follow existing paths where possible so the yard keeps its character.
Chimneys
Many older homes still have their original chimneys, and they take more weather than any other part of the house. We rebuild crowns, repoint and reset loose brick above the roofline, and work carefully around slate or older roofing.
Things to know first
- Historic review. Exterior changes in the district may need approval before a permit.
- Matching materials. We bring samples of brick, stone and mortar for comparison.
- Small sites. Tight lots and old trees mean smaller equipment and more hand work.
