Raritan is a small borough on the north bank of the Raritan River, sharing a border with Somerville to the east. It has a proud hometown character and a busy main street lined with older buildings. The residential streets are full of two story frame houses, many from the early and middle twentieth century, with covered front porches, short front yards and detached garages at the end of narrow driveways. The ground is mostly flat, sloping gently toward the river.
Front porches and the steps below them
The front porch is the defining feature of many Raritan homes, and it is often the part that needs the most attention. Concrete steps settle and crack, brick piers lean, and porch floors and roofs wear out. We rebuild concrete steps on new footings and finish them in block, brick or stone with bluestone treads. Because Pro One also does porch framing and roofing, we can rebuild the whole porch, from foundation to roof, without juggling several contractors.
Brick and block repairs

Older foundations, porch piers and chimneys in town are often brick or block with worn mortar. Our masonry repair crew replaces cracked units, rebuilds piers and repoints joints, and can clad porch columns or foundation walls in stone for a fresh look.
Driveways, walks and water
Long, narrow driveways to rear garages are common here. Many have cracked into pieces or sunk along the house. We replace them with new concrete or asphalt pitched to the street, and pour side walks that carry roof water away from the foundation. If the basement already gets damp, we look at gutters and grading first, then waterproofing if needed.
Before work starts in Raritan
- Borough permits. Steps, porches and driveway aprons generally need review.
- Shared driveways. Some houses share access, so neighbors should know the schedule.
- Low areas near the river. Check flood maps before planning major work.
