Allamuchy Township is really two kinds of place. A large share of homes sit in Panther Valley, a planned community of townhouses and single family houses laid out on curving streets. The rest of the township is quieter country: wooded hills, older houses on bigger parcels and long driveways tucked into the trees. A paver patio behind a townhome and a stone wall on a rocky hillside lot are very different jobs, so we treat them differently.
Townhomes and planned neighborhood lots

In a planned community the yard is often small and the neighbors are right there. A compact paver patio off the back door, a short walkway to the driveway or a rebuilt front stoop tends to be the right size of project. Because homes share a common look, we pay attention to color, border style and step height so the new work blends in with the street. Material access matters too. On attached homes we plan how pavers and stone reach the backyard before the delivery truck shows up.
Wooded hillside properties
Outside the planned neighborhoods, the ground is a different story. Lots are often sloped, shaded and full of rock and roots. We expect to hit stone when we dig for footings, and we size the base for wet, shady soil that stays damp longer in spring. On these properties retaining walls do a lot of the work: they create a level spot for a patio, hold back a cut bank beside the driveway or frame steps up to the front door.
What to sort out before the estimate
- Association rules. If you are inside a community association, check what it requires for exterior changes.
- Tree roots. Large trees near a planned patio or walk affect where we dig and how we build the base.
- Water from uphill. Note where runoff crosses the yard after a heavy rain. That decides where drains and swales go.
- Steps that move. Front steps that have pulled away from the house usually need a new footing, not a patch.
Steps and entries
Front entries on both townhomes and country houses take a beating from frost and plowed snow. We replace tired precast or poured stoops with concrete steps on proper footings, finished in concrete, stone veneer or brick with bluestone treads, plus new railings.
