Hope Township is a rural Warren County township with a historic village at its center. The village was founded as a Moravian settlement, and several of the early stone buildings still stand, alongside later houses, churches and shops. Around the village the township opens into farmland, woods and homes on larger lots. If your house is one of the old ones, the right repair can be very different from what a newer house needs.
Repointing old stone the right way
Historic stone walls move moisture differently than modern construction. They were built with lime mortar that is softer than the stone around it, so the joints wear first and can be renewed. When someone repoints with a hard cement mix, the stone ends up taking the stress and starts to crack or flake. Our tuckpointing and repointing work on old walls starts by raking out failing joints by hand and refilling them with a mortar that matches the original in strength and color.
Matching stone, brick and character

When a section of wall, a step or a chimney top has to be rebuilt, the goal is a repair you cannot easily pick out. That means sourcing stone with similar color and size, reusing original pieces where they are sound, and keeping joint width and tooling consistent. Our historic masonry restoration approach keeps as much original material in place as possible. Historic district rules may apply in the village, so plan for review time.
Practical points for owners of older houses
- Photograph cracks and loose stones before winter so changes are easy to spot in spring.
- Keep gutters and downspouts working. Most masonry damage starts with water.
- Avoid sealing old stone with coatings that stop it drying out.
- Ask before patching. A quick fix in the wrong mortar is hard to undo.
Newer homes in the township
Outside the village, Hope looks much like the rest of rural Warren County: country homes with long driveways, sloped yards and entries that take a lot of weather. We build bluestone walks, stone veneer steps, patios and walls for those properties too.
