Frelinghuysen Township is open, quiet country in the northeast part of Warren County. There is no downtown to speak of, just small villages such as Johnsonburg, farm fields, wooded ridges and homes spread along rural roads. Almost every property runs on a private well and a septic system, and those two things matter more to a hardscape layout here than they do in a town with sewer lines.
Working around wells and septic
Before we draw a patio or a new walk, we want to know where the septic tank, the distribution box and the leach field are, and where the well head sits. Heavy equipment over a leach field can crush pipes or compact the soil, so we route machines and deliveries away from it. A patio or walkway that looks perfect on paper sometimes shifts a few feet once those lines are marked, and that is fine. It is far cheaper than repairing a system later.
Front steps on farmhouses and country homes

Older farmhouses in the township often have stone or poured steps that have been patched for years. Newer homes may have precast stoops that tilt as the soil under them settles. In both cases the lasting fix is a new footing below the frost line. We build concrete steps faced in stone veneer, brick or plain concrete, with bluestone treads and railings sized for icy mornings.
Slopes, rock and stone walls
Much of the township rolls between fields and wooded hills. Walls do two jobs here: they hold soil and they tidy up the edge between lawn and field. We build segmental block or natural stone walls with drainage stone and a pipe behind them, because a wall that traps water will lean in a few winters.
Before we visit
- Mark the well, septic tank and leach field if you know where they are.
- Note any low spots that stay wet after rain.
- Think about where firewood, equipment or a trailer need to go.
- Have a rough idea of the size of patio you want and how many people use it.
Damp basements in the country
Rural houses in low spots can see water in the basement each spring. We start with grading and gutters and add basement waterproofing when the wall itself is the problem.
We serve Frelinghuysen and the rest of Warren County, including nearby Hope and Blairstown. When you are ready, get a free estimate and we will come walk the lot.
