Lopatcong Township borders Phillipsburg and climbs the hills above it. It is a suburban township, with a mix of mid century neighborhoods near the town line, newer subdivisions further up and a commercial strip along the main roads. Many lots slope, and many homes have entries several steps above the driveway or the sidewalk. Two requests come up again and again here: making that climb safer, and replacing plain, worn concrete with something that looks better.
Entries that are easier on the knees
A steep stoop with uneven risers is a fall waiting to happen, especially with ice on it. When we rebuild concrete steps we set every riser to the same height, give treads enough depth for a full foot, and add a landing at the door so no one has to step back while opening it. Railings on both sides, good lighting and a textured finish make a real difference. If the front door is close to grade, a gently sloped walk can sometimes replace steps entirely.
Stamped and decorative concrete

Stamped concrete gives the look of flagstone or slate with fewer joints to weed or trip on. It suits front walks, patios and pool surrounds on many Lopatcong homes. It does need periodic resealing, and it is best poured on a well compacted base so the slab does not crack and break up the pattern. For walks with a sound base and a tired surface, concrete resurfacing is a lower cost way to refresh the look.
Ways to make an older entry safer
- Railings on both sides, firmly anchored.
- Uniform riser heights from top to bottom.
- A landing at the door at least as wide as the door swing.
- Lighting at the top and bottom step.
- A textured surface that drains quickly.
Driveways and patios on sloping lots
Sloped driveways on the hill send water downhill fast. We pitch new driveways and patios to move water to the side, away from garages and foundations, and we use paver patios and walkways where a modular surface makes future repairs easier.
