Franklin Township in Warren County is not the Franklin in Somerset or Hunterdon. This one is rural farm country, with rolling fields, small villages, older farmhouses and newer homes built on generous lots. Properties are spread out, driveways are long and many homes sit well back from the road. That distance changes what a typical masonry or concrete project looks like.
Driveways that cover real distance
On a large lot, the driveway is often the biggest hard surface on the property. Gravel lanes rut, wash out on slopes and get scraped by plows every winter. We pour concrete and asphalt driveways and install paver sections where they make the most difference. A common plan is a paved apron at the road to stop gravel washing into the street, a solid parking pad near the garage and a stone or paver border that gives a clean edge.

Long drives also bring water. Runoff tends to run straight down the driveway, so we add crown, swales or channel drains to move it off the surface before it undermines the edges.
Farmhouse stone and newer country homes
Older farmhouses in the township often have stone foundations, stone walls along the yard and front steps that have been rebuilt more than once. We repair and rebuild that work with stone masonry that matches the existing character. Newer homes on former farmland raise different questions: builder grade stoops that settle as the backfill compacts, and wide open backyards waiting for a patio. We replace stoops on footings below frost and lay out patios sized to the house rather than the lawn.
Planning a project on open land
- Access for trucks. We check whether a concrete truck can reach the work area without crossing the septic field or a soft lawn.
- Septic and well. Patios, walls and driveways need to stay clear of both. Have the locations handy.
- Township permits. Driveway aprons at the road and taller walls may need approval. We confirm what applies.
- Weather exposure. Open lots catch wind and drifting snow, so we plan pitch and drainage with that in mind.
