Belvidere is the county seat of Warren County and one of its smallest towns, set where the Pequest River meets the Delaware. Much of the town is a recognized historic district, with Victorian homes, older brick and frame houses and stone foundations clustered around the town green and the courthouse. Masonry here is part of what gives the town its look, so repairs need to fit in, not just hold up.
Restoring brick and stone on older houses
Nineteenth century masonry was usually built with soft brick, local stone and lime mortar. Those materials move and breathe, and they were never meant to be sealed up with hard cement. Our historic masonry restoration work starts by understanding what the wall is made of, then repairing it with compatible materials. That means matched mortar, salvaged or closely matched brick, and natural stone set the way the original builders did it. Where a past repair used the wrong materials, we can often remove it and redo the area so it ages along with the rest of the wall.
Repointing is the most common job. Joints that have eroded or been filled with the wrong mortar let water in, and freeze and thaw does the rest. Careful tuckpointing restores them before the brick starts to fail.
Chimneys and foundations
Tall brick chimneys are a signature of older Belvidere homes, and they take the worst of the weather. Missing mortar, a cracked crown or a loose top course can let water into the attic and down the flue. We repoint, rebuild crowns and rebuild upper sections in matching brick when needed.
Below grade, stone and brick foundations often have washed out joints and loose stones, especially where gutters dump water against the wall. We repoint and reset foundation stone, rebuild bulging sections and correct the drainage outside.
Steps and entries that suit the house

Concrete steps added decades ago often look out of place on a Victorian or Federal style front. Rebuilding them in brick with bluestone treads, or in stone, brings the entry back in line with the house. Iron or aluminum railings in a simple pattern finish the look.
Before work starts
- Historic review. Ask the town about approval for exterior work in the district before finalizing plans.
- Match samples. We can mock up a small mortar or brick sample so you see the color before the full job.
- Lead paint and old finishes. Painted masonry on older homes may need special handling. We talk through it during the estimate.
- River conditions. Homes in low areas may need drainage planned along with the masonry.
Belvidere is a regular stop as we work across Warren County, along with river neighbors like Phillipsburg. If your brick, chimney or foundation needs care, book a free estimate and we will take a careful look.
