Hardwick Township is about as rural as Warren County gets. It lies in the northern part of the county under the Kittatinny Ridge, with much of the land in forest and the homes spread out along country roads and private drives. Lots tend to be large, wooded and anything but flat, and the ground is full of shale and rock. Those conditions shape almost every masonry and concrete project we plan here.
Rock, slope and retaining walls
When a house sits on a hillside in the woods, usable flat ground is limited. Retaining walls carve out a level parking area, a patio or a garden terrace and keep soil off the driveway after a storm. Digging in Hardwick usually means hitting rock, so we plan for it: we level ledge where it is useful, break out what is in the way and set the wall base on firm material. Drainage stone and a pipe behind the wall keep water pressure from building up during spring melt.
Long drives and remote access

Getting materials to the job is its own task on a remote lot. Before quoting, we check the width of the drive, overhead branches, soft spots and where a delivery truck can turn around. For the drive itself, a concrete or asphalt section at the steepest point or at the road can end the cycle of washouts. We set driveways with crown and cross drains so storm water leaves the surface quickly.
Steps that climb the hill
Front doors on sloped lots often sit well above or below the driveway. We build stone, block or poured concrete steps with landings that break up a long climb and railings that make them safe in winter.
Useful notes for wooded properties
- Leaves and needles hold moisture on stone, so we pitch every surface to shed water.
- Mark wells, septic lines and any buried power before we dig.
- Expect a little more time for excavation where ledge is close to the surface.
- Shady areas freeze first and thaw last. Pick textured finishes for steps and walks.
