Carteret is an older industrial borough on the Arthur Kill, and most of its housing reflects that history. Streets are lined with two story frame houses, small capes and two family homes set close together, many with narrow driveways, short front walks and a stoop that meets the sidewalk. Lots are small and the ground is mostly flat, which shapes almost every project we price here.
Driveways and aprons on narrow lots
Plenty of Carteret driveways are a single car wide and run tight against the house or a neighbor’s fence. When the concrete cracks and drops, there is little room to work around it, so we plan demolition, forms and pours in sections when needed. A new concrete driveway on a compacted stone base, pitched toward the street, keeps water off the foundation. Where the apron and sidewalk are lifted by a street tree, replacing them at the same time gives a clean, even finish.
Stoops that face the street

On a block where houses sit near the sidewalk, the front stoop is the first thing people see. Older poured stoops in town often have spalled treads, loose railings and a gap opening up against the house. We rebuild concrete steps on a new footing, or face them in brick or stone veneer, and set new railings. Porch roofs over the stoop can be framed and roofed at the same time.
Salt air, flat ground and brick
Being close to the water means brick and mortar here take a steady beating from wind, salt and winter freeze. Watch for:
- mortar joints that have worn back from the brick face
- white staining (efflorescence) on foundation walls
- parging that is cracking or falling off
- puddles that stay next to the house for a day after rain
Repointing worn joints and correcting grading are usually cheaper than waiting until bricks start to loosen. When water is reaching the basement, we look at basement waterproofing along with the outside fixes.
Planning a job in Carteret
Because homes share tight side yards, we talk through where the dumpster or trailer will sit, how the concrete truck will reach the work, and how long the driveway will be out of use. Low areas near the water may fall under flood zone rules, which we check before design.
We also work in neighboring Woodbridge and across Middlesex County. When your Carteret driveway or stoop is ready for a fix, ask for a free estimate and we will come take measurements.
