Across the Raritan River from Perth Amboy, South Amboy is a small city on Raritan Bay with a long railroad and waterfront history. Its neighborhoods are mostly older single family homes and two families on narrow lots, many with front porches a few steps above the sidewalk. Exposure to bay weather is a constant theme in the masonry here.
Front steps that face the weather
Steps on older South Amboy homes take wind driven rain and repeated freeze and thaw. Concrete treads scale, brick loosens and railings rust at their bases. When we rebuild front steps, we pour on a proper footing, choose dense concrete or stone treads, and anchor railings into sound material so they stay tight. Stone veneer risers with bluestone treads are a durable upgrade on older facades.
Porches, top to bottom

A porch is part of daily life on many blocks here, and it often needs more than new steps. We can rebuild the masonry piers or block foundation, pour a new porch slab, clad column bases in stone and frame and roof the porch above. Doing it all together keeps the finished porch level and watertight.
Sidewalks and short driveways
Narrow lots mean short driveways and sidewalks that run right along the property. Things to know before replacing them:
- sidewalk and apron work generally goes through the city
- a lifted slab at a tree may need a different layout
- driveway pitch should carry water to the street, not the garage
- worn but level slabs may be good candidates for resurfacing
Masonry and foundations
Older homes often have brick chimneys, block foundations and parged walls that need repointing or patching. In low lying blocks near the bay, flood zone rules may apply, and we look at grading and foundation waterproofing where basements take on water.
