Edison covers a lot of ground, and most of its neighborhoods grew up in the decades after World War II. Drive through almost any section of the township and you see the same housing types: ranches, capes, split-levels and center hall colonials, many with their original concrete still in place. Those driveways, stoops and walks have been through decades of freeze and thaw, and a lot of them are due.
Driveways that have reached the end
Original driveways in Edison tend to show the same signs: wide cracks, sunken slabs near the garage, and patched asphalt that breaks up every spring. When the base underneath has failed, sealing and patching will not hold for long. We tear out the old surface, rebuild the base with compacted stone, and pour new concrete or asphalt driveways or lay pavers. If you have been thinking about widening for a second car, this is the time to do it.
Backyard patios built to stay flat

Edison lots are a comfortable size for outdoor living. Many families here want a patio off the back door, a walkway to the side gate and a spot for a fire pit. We build paver patios on a proper stone base with edge restraint and a gentle pitch away from the house, so the surface stays level and rainwater goes where it should. Borders, inlays and a seating wall can dress up a simple layout without making it complicated.
Steps, stoops and wet basements
Precast and poured stoops on postwar homes often settle away from the foundation over time. That gap lets water run down along the wall, which is one reason some Edison basements stay damp. We rebuild steps in poured concrete, brick or stone veneer with bluestone treads and railings sized to code. When a basement takes on water, we look at grading, downspouts and the walls themselves before recommending basement waterproofing.
Before you start
- Township approval. Driveways, aprons, retaining walls and steps can all need sign off from the township. We find out what applies and file it.
- Sidewalk condition. If the public walk in front of your home is lifted or cracked, replacing it alongside the driveway keeps the finish consistent.
- Utilities and drainage. We mark out utilities before digging and plan where water will go once the new surface is in.
- Season timing. Concrete and pavers go in from spring through fall. Getting an estimate over the winter gives you more choice of dates.
We work across Edison and the surrounding towns, including Metuchen, Highland Park and South Plainfield. See the rest of Middlesex County or our page for neighboring Woodbridge.
