This page covers Monroe Township in Middlesex County, not the Monroe Townships elsewhere in New Jersey. It is a large, mostly flat township in the southern part of the county, and it is home to a long list of active adult communities alongside newer single family neighborhoods and remaining farmland. The ground is generally sandy and level. Most homes here are from the last few decades, so the projects tend to be upgrades rather than rescues.
Easier steps and entries
For many Monroe homeowners, safety at the front and back doors is the priority. Steps that were fine at first can become a challenge. We rebuild steps with lower, even risers and generous treads, add landings big enough to stand on while opening a door, and install railings on both sides. Where there is room, a gently graded paver walk can replace a step altogether.
Things that make an entry easier to use:
- risers kept low and identical from top to bottom
- a textured, slip resistant tread surface
- railings that extend past the top and bottom step
- lighting at the steps and along the walkway
Patios that extend a small yard

Homes in adult communities often come with a small builder grade patio. Extending it with pavers, adding a wraparound step or setting bluestone stepping stones in gravel can make it much more usable without taking over the yard. In single family neighborhoods with larger lots, full patios with seating walls and fire pits are common requests. We plan each layout around HOA guidelines when they apply.
Pool decks and sandy soil
Sandy soil drains well but needs a well compacted base under any hard surface. That matters most around pools, where decks see heavy use and constant water. We build paver and stamped concrete pool decks on a deep base with a pitch away from the water, and handle coping and surrounding masonry.
Concrete that is starting to wear
Even newer concrete can show surface scaling from deicing salt. If a walkway or driveway is structurally sound, resurfacing can restore the surface without a full tear out.
