Woodbridge is one of the oldest townships in New Jersey, but most of its housing went up in the twentieth century. It is really a collection of neighborhoods: Iselin, Colonia, Fords, Avenel, Port Reading, Sewaren, Hopelawn, Keasbey and Woodbridge proper. Each has its own feel, from older streets of modest homes close to the train to postwar capes and split-levels on quieter blocks. Across all of them, we hear the same requests.
Front steps and stoops
The most common call from Woodbridge homeowners is about the front steps. Older stoops crack along the treads, lose their railings, or settle so far that a gap opens between the top step and the door. We take out the old steps and build new concrete steps on a proper footing. You can keep it simple with poured concrete or go with block or brick faced in stone veneer and topped with bluestone. New railings go in at the right height and spacing.
Driveways, walks and sidewalks
Many driveways in the township are original or close to it. Settled slabs, heaved joints and crumbling aprons are signs the base has given out. We remove the old concrete or asphalt, rebuild the base and pour new. For slabs that are mostly sound, concrete repair and resurfacing or targeted crack repair can extend their life at a lower cost than replacement.
Front walks and public sidewalks get the same treatment. When a sidewalk slab lifts and becomes a trip hazard, we replace the section and match it to the neighbors.
Backyards and side yards

Lots in much of Woodbridge are modest, so we design patios to use space well. A patio and walkway that links the back door, the driveway and the side gate makes the whole yard easier to use. Pavers and bluestone both work well here, and we slope every surface so water moves away from the foundation.
Good to know before work begins
- Township rules. Woodbridge has its own building and engineering requirements for steps, driveways and aprons. We confirm them and file what is needed.
- Concrete needs the right weather. We pour when temperatures allow proper curing, which usually means spring through late fall.
- Older foundations. Taking out an old stoop sometimes shows cracked parging or a damaged foundation wall. We point it out and give you options before closing it up.
- Neighbors are close. On tighter blocks we plan truck access and keep the street and walks clean.
We cover the whole township and nearby Carteret, Perth Amboy and Metuchen. See the rest of Middlesex County or our page for Edison next door.
