South River is a compact borough named for the river that runs along its edge, and it has the feel of an older working town. Streets are lined with early and mid twentieth century homes set close together: frame houses with front porches, two families and modest brick homes, many with short driveways and concrete walks right to the sidewalk. Some low lying streets sit close to the water. Most of what we do here is repair and renewal of masonry that has done decades of service.
Front steps and porches

Porches are a defining feature of South River homes, and the masonry under them is often the first thing to fail. Piers lean, slabs crack and steps separate from the porch. We rebuild steps and porch masonry on proper footings, with bluestone landings, stone veneer or brick facing and new railings. Porch roofs and framing can be included in the same job.
Brick, block and repointing
Older foundations, chimneys and brick walls in town show the usual signs of age. A quick checklist to walk around your house with:
- mortar joints you can scrape out with a key
- cracks that step diagonally through block or brick
- loose bricks on the chimney or porch piers
- crumbling parging at the base of the foundation
Our masonry repair work covers repointing, brick replacement and rebuilding damaged sections.
Keeping water out
Being a river town, South River has properties where water is a real concern. Low areas may fall under flood zone rules, and older basements often take on water through walls and floor joints. We look at grading, gutters and the condition of the foundation, then recommend basement waterproofing if needed.
Short driveways and walks
Driveways in town are usually short and narrow. We replace them on a compacted base, pitch them to the street and coordinate apron and sidewalk work with the borough.
