Helmetta is a very small borough built around a historic snuff mill, and the town still feels like a mill village surrounded by woods. Homes range from older worker houses near the center to mid century and newer homes on the edges, mostly modest in size. The ground is sandy and drains quickly, and many yards are shaded by mature trees. Projects here tend to be smaller and very practical.
The right footing in sandy ground
Sandy soil makes digging easy and lets rainwater soak away, but it does not hold a thin base very well. Steps and walks laid on a couple of inches of stone can wash out at the edges or settle unevenly over a few winters. On Helmetta jobs we:
- dig down to firm soil before setting footings
- compact base stone in thin layers
- lock paver edges with restraint so sand cannot migrate
- direct downspouts away from new work so it is not undermined
Side doors, back doors and front steps

On older homes the side and back entries are often the ones used every day, and they are frequently the most neglected. Cracked concrete steps with no railing are common. We build concrete steps or brick and stone steps with bluestone treads at any door of the house, sized so the landing is wide enough to open a storm door without stepping back down.
Small patios under the trees
Shade and tree roots shape backyard projects in a wooded town. We position a patio so it avoids major roots where possible and gets some sun to dry out after rain, which helps keep moss and algae down. A small paver patio or walkway leading from the back door is often all a yard needs.
Foundations on older houses
Older homes near the mill area may have stone, brick or block foundations that show their age with loose mortar or cracks. We repair and repoint foundation walls and, when a section has failed, rebuild it as part of our foundation repair work.
