Not to be confused with the county that shares its name, the Borough of Middlesex is a small, mostly residential town on the county’s western edge, near Bound Brook and Dunellen. Its neighborhoods filled in largely after World War II with capes, ranches, split-levels and some colonials on regular suburban lots. The land is low and flat, and many of the original driveways, stoops and walks are now well worn.
Driveways on flat lots

With very little natural slope, water on a Middlesex driveway can run back toward the garage or pool against the foundation. When we replace a concrete or asphalt driveway, we set a deliberate pitch to the street and, where needed, add a trench drain at the garage. Stamped concrete or a paver border along the walkway is a good way to dress up a simple postwar house without a large added cost.
Stoops on capes and ranches
Small stoops on postwar homes are often precast or thin poured concrete sitting on shallow fill. Over decades they drop an inch or two and tilt toward the house. We remove them and build new front steps on a proper footing, then finish them in concrete, brick or stone veneer with new railings.
A patio for the backyard
Middlesex backyards are a comfortable size for a patio and a small lawn. Good fits for a typical lot:
- a rectangular paver patio off the back door with a border inlay
- a side walkway from the driveway to the backyard gate
- a compact fire pit area at the edge of the patio
- a stepping stone path through planting beds
Keeping basements dry
Flat ground and older foundations can mean damp basements, and some low lying sections near local brooks may fall under flood zone rules. Before building anything against the house, we check grading and downspouts. For walls with cracks or seepage we offer crack repair and full basement waterproofing.
