Califon is a tiny borough set in the valley of the South Branch of the Raritan River, bordered largely by Lebanon Township. It grew up as a rural village in the 1800s, and that history is still easy to see. Homes stand close to the road on narrow lots, many with original brick or stone foundations, front stoops, porches and chimneys. Walls of local stone line yards and banks, and the river runs right through the middle of town.
For masonry, that means a lot of careful repair. Replacing old work with something that looks brand new is rarely the right answer here.
Repointing and historic repair
The most common problem on Califon houses is worn mortar. Joints open up, water gets in, and freeze and thaw loosens brick and stone. Our historic masonry restoration work starts by looking at what the wall is made of and what mortar was used originally. Then we rake out failed joints by hand and repoint with a compatible mix, keeping joint width and color close to the original. Chimneys get the same approach, plus a sound crown and flashing.
Stoops, steps and entries

A brick stoop with bluestone treads is right at home on a village street. Older stoops often settle or lose their treads, and the brick underneath turns soft. We rebuild on a footing below frost, reuse good original stone where we can, and add simple railings where the rise needs one. See our tuckpointing and repointing service for joint work that does not need a full rebuild.
Stone walls near the river
Garden walls and bank walls in a river village take a beating from runoff and high water. Many are dry laid or set in soft mortar. We reset bulging sections, replace missing stones with matching stone and add drainage behind the wall so water stops pushing it out.
Before work begins in Califon
