Flemington is a small borough at the center of Hunterdon County and its county seat. The downtown and the streets around it are lined with older homes in brick, stone and frame, many of them in a historic district, while the surrounding Raritan Township holds newer neighborhoods. The masonry we do in Flemington leans toward stone, brick and careful repair, with an eye on how each piece looks from the street.
Stone and brick that fit older homes
Older Flemington houses often have stone foundations, brick walls or chimneys and bluestone at the entry. When those pieces wear out, the repair should look like it belongs. Our stone masonry and brickwork covers new stone veneer, brick facing and rebuilt walls, and we choose stone sizes, colors and joint styles to blend with what is already on the house.
For walls that are original and worth saving, historic masonry restoration is the better route. We repoint with compatible mortar, reset loose stone and replace only what has failed, which keeps the character that makes these homes worth owning. We also remove old cement patches that have trapped moisture against soft brick or stone, then repair the area with compatible material.
Entries, steps and walkways

A front entry sets the tone for an older house. We rebuild sagging concrete steps and replace them with brick or stone steps and bluestone treads, often with a landing large enough to set down groceries. Walkways from the sidewalk or driveway follow, in bluestone, brick pavers or concrete. On a corner lot or a home set above the street, a short stone wall can frame the walk and hold the front lawn in place.
Building on Hunterdon clay
Much of the ground around Flemington is heavy clay that drains slowly. That matters for anything laid on grade. Patios and walkways need a thicker stone base and proper pitch, and step footings need to sit below frost on undisturbed soil. We also look at gutters and downspouts, since water dumped next to a new step or walk is one of the quickest ways to undo good work.
Before you plan
- Historic district. Ask the borough whether your property falls in the district and what review applies.
- Borough permits. Steps, walls and work near the sidewalk may need a permit from the building department.
- Match materials. We can show stone and brick samples on site so you can compare them to the house.
- Season. Mortar and concrete need mild weather to cure. Early booking helps.
