Holland Township is the northwestern corner of Hunterdon County, bounded by the Delaware River on the west and the Musconetcong River on the north, where the two meet. The land rises steeply from the riverbanks to wooded bluffs and then opens into rolling farmland. Homes are spread out: older houses near the rivers, farmhouses on the uplands, and newer homes on wooded lots with long driveways. Most run on wells and septic.
Elevation changes everything here. A house on the bluff and a house near the riverbank face very different site problems, and both are common in Holland.
Making room on the hillsides

Many Holland Township yards slope away from the house, sometimes sharply. A level outdoor space usually needs a cut, a fill and a retaining wall to hold it. We plan the patio, wall and steps together so they read as one design and drain as one system. On these hillsides, runoff from above is as important as support below.
Patios, gravel and fire pits
Not every outdoor space needs to be fully paved. A paver or bluestone patio near the house, with gravel and bluestone stepping stones leading out to a fire pit, fits the wooded and rural feel of the township. We build patios and walkways on a compacted base thick enough for freeze and thaw, and keep everything well clear of septic fields.
Near the rivers
Homes closer to the Delaware and the Musconetcong deal with groundwater, damp basements and in some spots flood zone rules. We repair foundation walls, improve grading and add waterproofing where needed. Exterior work on low lying lots gets checked against township and flood requirements first.
Stone that fits the place
Older farmhouses and stone walls are scattered across the uplands. When we add new stone steps or walls near them, we match the color and size of the local stone so new work does not stand out.
Planning points for Holland Township
- Steep driveways can limit truck size, so we plan deliveries
- Wells and septic systems get marked before digging
- Hillside patios need drainage above and below
- Low lying lots may carry flood zone rules
