Clinton Township is the larger of the two Clintons in Hunterdon County. It surrounds the small Town of Clinton and includes Annandale along with a long stretch of rolling countryside. A big share of its homes were built in subdivisions from the 1970s through the 1990s: center hall colonials, split levels and contemporaries on half acre to two acre lots. Older farmhouses and newer custom homes fill the rural edges.

That housing stock reaches a predictable point. Original concrete walks, asphalt drives and wood decks are wearing out at the same time, and owners want to update them in materials that last.

Front entries on suburban colonials

Many township homes still have the narrow concrete walk and plain steps they were built with. A wider walkway in pavers with a contrasting border, curved to the driveway, gives a colonial a stronger front. We build paver walkways and patios on compacted stone with edge restraint, and rebuild steps in brick, stone veneer or poured concrete to match.

Backyards and outdoor living

Bigger yards make room for a full patio with a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, a seating wall, and a walkway back to the driveway. Replacing an aging deck with a ground level patio is a common request. Lots in the township tend to slope, so we often add a low retaining wall to level the patio area and tie in steps down to the lawn.

Driveways

Long driveways on township lots are a big part of the job list. We replace cracked concrete and tired asphalt and build paver driveways with a deep base for heavy vehicles. On a sloped drive, we pitch the surface and add drainage so water does not run into the garage.

Planning notes for Clinton Township

  • Separate from the town. Clinton Township and the Town of Clinton issue their own permits.
  • Clay soils. Hunterdon clay holds water, so we build deeper bases under pavers and slabs.
  • HOA rules. Some neighborhoods have association guidelines for materials and colors.
  • Septic on rural lots. We locate tanks and fields before any digging.

Is this page for Clinton Township or the Town of Clinton?

This page covers Clinton Township, the larger municipality that surrounds the town and includes Annandale. The Town of Clinton has its own page and its own building department. We work in both.

Our 1980s colonial still has the original front walk and steps. Where should we start?

Usually with the entry. A new paver or bluestone walkway and rebuilt steps change the look of the house the most for the work involved. A back patio can follow later and use matching pavers.

Can pavers go over our existing asphalt driveway?

We do not recommend it. Asphalt moves and holds water, so pavers laid over it tend to shift. We remove the old surface and build a compacted stone base so the paver driveway stays flat for the long run.

Who approves retaining walls in Clinton Township?

The township building department. Walls over a certain height, and walls that hold up a driveway or patio, often need a permit and sometimes an engineered design. We confirm the rules before we price the job.
