Union Township is a rural and semi-rural municipality in western Hunterdon County, not to be confused with the larger Union Township in Union County. Interstate 78 crosses it, and the land rolls from farm fields to wooded hills. Homes include older farmhouses, mid-century houses on country roads, and newer neighborhoods of colonials on one to several acres closer to the highway. Wells and septic serve most properties.
That mix of farmland and newer homes means most Union Township projects are about outdoor living: patios, walls and walks that make a sloped lot usable.
Paver patios shaped to the yard

Few Union Township yards are flat or square, so we rarely build a plain rectangle. Curved edges, circular sitting areas and long patios that follow the side of the house all fit the land better. Our paver construction starts with a compacted stone base deep enough for the clay and shale soils of western Hunterdon, and an edge restraint that keeps curves tight.
Retaining walls for rolling lots
When a yard slopes toward or away from the house, a retaining wall can create a level terrace for a patio or lawn. We build segmental block and natural stone walls with drainage stone and outlets, and often add steps into the wall to connect upper and lower levels.
Driveways and walkways
Longer driveways on country lots and in newer neighborhoods eventually crack, sink or wash out. We replace concrete and asphalt drives and build paver driveways, with attention to pitch and runoff. A walkway from the driveway to the front or side door is often added at the same time.
Fire pits and arbors
A fire pit at the edge of the patio or a simple arbor over a seating area gives the space a focal point. We build stone and block fire pits sized to the patio.
Things to sort out early
- Septic tank and field location before any layout
- Drainage paths from the slope above the patio
- HOA guidelines in some newer neighborhoods
- Township approval for taller walls and new driveways
